5 AutoCAD LISP Routines That Make Drafting 3x Faster
AutoCAD’s built-in commands do a lot, but the repetitive work — the copy-paste-dimension-repeat loop — is where draftsmen lose hours. LISP (AutoLISP) automates exactly that. Here are five routines that make an immediate difference, with what each one saves you.
1. One-key layer change
A routine that switches to a named layer (or creates it if missing) with a single keystroke removes the constant layer-dropdown trips. Bind it to a short alias and you never hunt for “DIM” or “HIDDEN” again.
2. Auto-dimension a rectangle or polyline
Select a closed polyline once and have it place aligned dimensions on all sides, with the offset and text height you prefer. Seconds instead of a dozen clicks per view.
3. Batch offset with a set distance
Offset multiple objects at once at a fixed distance — walls, edges, sleeves, cable trays. One command replaces selecting each line, typing the distance, and repeating.
4. Rename / renumber blocks and text in sequence
Renumber text or attributes (P1, P2, P3…) or increment a block’s attribute across a sheet without touching each one. This alone turns a 20-minute edit into a 10-second command.
5. Purge-and-audit in one pass
A single command that runs purge, audit, and removes empty layers/text styles, then reports the drawing size before and after. Smaller, cleaner files that open faster and share without errors.

You can write these yourself, or start from a working set.
We package a collection of ready-to-load LISP routines for the exact patterns above — faster drafting, lighter drawings, no scripting from scratch. Drag in, load with `APPLOAD`, and bind the ones you use most.
